Gorilla on Water Ski

I am looking to make specialized water skis to be used at the base of pyramids and need glue that is unique to this project. If Gorilla glue is to work in this project it must accomplish three tasks:

1.  The first step is using Gorilla Glue to edge glue 3-4 pieces of White Ash together into 3/4" x 9" x 74" slabs.  the first 18" of these slabs are then resawn ( with one cut down to the middle (front of the ski will be split into two 3/8" x 9" sections) to provide relief for the bend in the front of the ski.  The skis are then put into a steamer and the glue has to withstand a 212 degree, 100% climate for an hour without the 3/8" x 9" front edge glued joints weakening or letting go.

2. The skis will be taken out of the steamer and Gorilla Glue will be used to filled the relief cut gap in front of the skis.  At this point and for the following 30 minutes the wood is at high moisture content, The front of the skis will then go into a jig that will clamp the wood into a curve.  Will the glue work well with the high moisture content.

3.  Once the skis are competed they will be finished with a waterproof sealer and used in the water all summer long.  Will the glue be strong enough to hold the wood together in the water and banging around on the dock?  Will the glue hold the skis together for 1 year, 5 years, 10 years 20 years?

What do you think?

Re: Gorilla on Water Ski

Thanks for your questions. We are not going to be able to tell you how long the glue bond will last.  To truly know the specific answer, we would have to test the exact thing you are doing and to subject it to weathering.

The good news is:  We can say more than likely the glue will outlast the wood.   The glue has been used in the European boating industry for years.  However, again this depends on many different factors:  type of wood you are using, the amount of glue you used, the amount of clamping pressure, etc.

We suggest that you make a sample ski, soak it then dry it out a couple of times, heat it/cool it several times to see how things look before you build more. In fact, if you send us a small piece of the front of the ski, not the entire ski, we can run some tests on the wood you are using to see about the stress on the bond joints from the steam bending after bonding.

Re: Gorilla on Water Ski

We used the Original Gorilla Glue to make 2 pair of water skis and the glue worked very well in the building process. The edge glued boards held together, even when put the front of the skis into a 100% humid steamer at 212 degrees for an hour.  The glue was also put into the front relief cut after steaming and held the front bend very well when taken out of the jig without any spring-back.  We finished one pair of the skis with 3 coats of spar varnish and left the other pair completely free of any type of finish.  We plan to expose the wood and glue of the unfinished ski directly to the elements (lake) in order to see how good this glue really is.  We were told that the only glue that would hold up to the harsh environment of a summer of water skiing is an expensive $200 per gallon epoxy that could only be bought in 5 gallon buckets.  I hope the Gorilla is up for the test as we will be pounding the crap out of you all summer long while you are naked without any varnish for protection!
